The title of this study is “The Difficulties Faced by Students in Understanding
Narrative Text at SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Banda Aceh”. The objectives of this
study are to find out the students’ ability of SMP Muhammadiyah I Banda Aceh
in understanding narrative text and to investigate the problems solving of the
difficulties faced by the students in understanding narrative text. The population
of this study was the all of the students of SMP Muhammadiyah I Banda Aceh,
which is 133 students. The sample of this study is all of the class VIII2 students
which is 14 students. The instruments of this study are observation, interview,
questionnaire, and test. The instruments are analyzed by using descriptive
qualitative. The result of this study shows that the students’ ability of SMP
Muhammadiyah 1 Banda Aceh in understanding narrative text is classified of
enough category. It is proved by mean score of the students, which is 65. It
means, the students have some difficulties in understanding narrative text. Based
on the result of this study, the difficulties that frequently faced by the students are
the difficulty in mastering grammar and vocabulary. Therefore, the problem
solving of difficulty in understanding narrative text that come from the English
teacher of class VIII2 are by giving the emphasis on learning grammar and telling
the students about the meaning of some difficult vocabularies by writing them
down on the white board.
