This study is about “ The Student „ Reading Comprehension Difficulties in TOEFL ( A
Descriptive Study at Seventh Students of English Department University Muhammadiyah Aceh )” .
The purposes of this study are to find out the item of reading aspects that difficulty faced by the sixth
students of University Muhammadiyah Aceh in TOEF And to investigate the factors influenced the
students’ difficulty faced by the students in TOEFL reading test. The method use in this study is
descriptive quantitative research. Population of this study is all of the students of English department
at Muhammadiyah University, there are 113 students. Meanwhile, 14 students as the sample are
taken by using purposive sampling. The data was collected by using test and questionnaire and
analyzed by using percentage formula. The result shows that The student faced by the sixth students
of University Muhammadiyah Aceh in TOEFL. There are four difficult skills faced by the students.
First, main idea, implied detail question, unstated detail, stated detail question and vocabulary
question. The average of correct answer reached by the students was 12 or 13 questions from 50
questions. It means, only 24-25% of the questions could answer by the students. From all of reading
aspects in TOEFL, the most difficult aspect answered by the students is inference. The factors that
influenced the students’ difficulty faced by students in TOEFL reading test are limited vocabulary,
difficulty in using key words to search for main idea, the students’ background knowledge is limited
to comprehend the text.
