This research aimed to explore and analyze the use of code-switching among
students in the Department of English Language. A quantitative descriptive
research method was employed, involving data collection through a questionnaire
distributed to students actively using code-switching in their daily interactions
within the campus environment. The population used in this research consisted of
6 universities and obtained 36 samples and the authors used a questionnaire for
more specific data for data collection. To analysis data has been obtained from
this questionnaire instrument were then analyzed with the stages of data reduction,
data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The research findings indicated that
the use of code-switching among students in the Department of English Language
occurred in various communication situations, both in informal conversations in
class, campus settings, and social interactions outside the campus. It was found
that the primary reasons behind code-switching usage included the need for
expression, better comprehension, as well as a strategy to adapt to social and
cultural environments. Moreover, the findings revealed that the dominant pattern
of code-switching involved transitions between English and Indonesian
languages, emphasizing the use of specific phrases or words that did not have
direct equivalents in the target language. This research contributes to a deeper
understanding of the code-switching phenomenon among students in the
Department of English Language, along with its implications in social, cultural,
and educational contexts. Recommendations from this study include the necessity
for a more creative approach to language learning, considering the diversity of
languages used by students.
