Abstract

Google Translate is often used by students to help the process of translating
English text to Indonesian or vice versa. This study was conducted to find out in
what ways Google Translate can be used in translating text from English to
Indonesian and the challenges faced by students in using Google Translate. This
study used quantitave research. Data collection technique was a questionnaire.
The subjects in this study were English students at the Muhammadiyah Aceh
University, totaling 62 people, and 33 people were used the samples. The result of
this study have that students translate text from English to Indonesian by
translating word by word, translating it in sentences, and translating paragraph by
paragraph. Students also translate using features from Google Translate, such as
word detection and voice features. and the challenge faced by students in used
Google Translate have that Google Translate changes the meaning of the original
texts, made sentence structures and word order in phrases messy, and made
students lazy to opened dictionaries. Apart from the challenges faced by students
in used Google Translate, almost all students considered that Google Translate
have useful in the translation process.
