Pragmatic has been known as a branch of linguistic study that is concerned with the
meaning of an utterance. Through this field of study, it is known that Speech Acts
becomes on the factor of pragmatic. Speech acts has several kinds of acts; locutionary act,
illocutionary act, and perlocution act. This study, with the title “the perlocutionary acts of
Mr. Keating’s utterances towards his students in the Dead Poets Society”, aims to
identify the perlocutionary acts of Mr. Keating’s utterances when teaching in the Dead
Poets Society and the impacts of perlocutionary acts of the main character to the students
in Dead Poets Society movie. This research is focuses on Qualitative research. The
technique of data collection used observation technique of gathering data and in analyzing
the data mainly used the data that need to be described and interpreted in verbal form.
The object of this study is Mr. Keating’s utterances in the movie. The data collected is in
the form of word or screen-capture pictures and using numbers as supporting data. Based
on the result of this study, it indicates that the types of perlocutions in the classroom that
Mr. Keating used the most; To inspire the hearer with 25,78125% and to get hearer to do
something with 27,34375%, to enlighten the hearer with 14,0625%, and there were two
types that had the same percentage; to convince the hearer and to cause the hearer. In this
case, the findings were in accordance to the impact of the students acts. Mr. Keating
showed a progressive literature teacher and dare to encourage his students to break free
from the norm, go against the status quo and live life unapologetically. The purposed was
to make his students become more creative and can find their passions.
